Fashion and the City

One of this summer’s blockbuster movies Sex and the City 2 is scheduled to hit theaters today. With tons of anxious fans and fashionistas waiting to see what Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte are going to be wearing. The fabulous Patricia Field, stylist for the movie is back to work her magic and is sparing no expense. It’s rumored that the costume budget topped a whopping $10 million dollars. These ladies of the upper east side of Manhattan and Brooklyn wear nothing less than Haute Couture from all the top designers and look just as amazing wearing these garments from the streets of NYC to the souks of Abu Dhabi. “The movie is more about the whole ensemble…In the first movie, it was about the studded belt and the gladiator sandals. In [the second] movie, it is more about the clothing and whatever shoe works.” Patricia Field told editors during an interview. Field even confirmed that Sarah will be repeating some outfits that she wore during the TV series, for example the Christian Dior newspaper print gown and defended her repeat by saying “There is a reason. It’s in the plotline”. As all fans of the show know the character Carrie is famous for her intense shoe game. These traditional Sex and the City pieces of art from Manolo Blahniks, Brian Atwood, Christian Louboutin and YSL just to name a few. Patricia Field will also be showcasing her new line for the Payless Shoe Source worn by the less prominent cast members. Sarah Jessica Parker is the creative director for the Halston fashion label whose clothing will be predominantly featured throughout the film. Her character Carrie has a total of 48 outfits and surprisingly enough will mainly be matched up with Christian Louboutins instead of Manolo Blahniks. Don’t be alarmed; even though the Manolo pumps will not be a staple in this sequel they are still featured. The one fashion travesty that has Hollywood and the fashion world in a buzz is the flash back to the 80’s scene, boxy skirt suits and white trainers need I say more? Nonetheless this movie should be a couture fashion show from the beginning to the end.

The Boyfriend Jacket

For the past couple of seasons it seems like women have been shopping in their husbands, boyfriends, brothers and fathers’ closets. This is result of a reoccurring trend called the “Boyfriend”. I wrote an article a couple months ago were I mentioned that the “boyfriend” jean is one of the current trends for women during the 2010 spring/summer season. In addition to that the Balance Velasquez interview were one of his designers Lily and Jae based out of Vancouver also embraces this look for females. In previous seasons the boyfriend sweater and shirt was on the forefront of fashion. Today it’s the boyfriend jacket, so gentlemen if you are reading this post hide your clothing because they will definitely go missing. This trend is a flash back to the 80’s mixed with a little deja`vu of Jasmine Guy in A Different World or Demi Moore in Ghost wearing this piece with a pair of skinny jeans, boyfriend shirt, tucked in with a brown belt with matching loafers and a fedora. As we all know fashion always repeats itself but is always evolving. Today this boyfriend trend is worn with a mixture of both masculine and feminine pieces. These oversize garments with the sleeves rolled up can be worn with a pair of shorts, mini, jeans or leggings. Two things you should remember is make sure the jacket is one size bigger to accentuate the shoulders and cuff or roll the sleeves to balance out your outfit and show your wrist to add femininity.

Nicholas K

Nicholas and Christopher Kunz founded the design company Nicholas K back in 2003. Nicholas worked for big design labels such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Polo prior to her decision to branch off on her own. Something a little unorthodox occurred which led to the creation of this brand we know today as Nicholas K. Nicholas met with a Tarot card reader and clairvoyant in the mountains of Santa Fe while visiting her brother. She was advised to start her own business ASAP and that it was her destiny. Clearly she listened and hasn’t looked back since; being that Nicholas K is a very successful brand today. I was very inspired to write about this label after viewing the entire Spring/Summer collection which is edgy, fashionably chic and wearable. Not only is Nicholas K selling individual pieces but entire outfits.

The Nicholas K 2010 Spring/Summer men’s collection really encompasses Nicholas’ roots with Calvin, Tommy and Polo. It’s masculine and very modern. The color palette is based upon navy, grey and black. At the same time using soft pastel colors to bring to life and give it that spring feel. I love the fact that the look book is a combination of fitted styles mixed with stripes, plaid prints, cuffed shorts and ripped jeans to add a very casual tone to the collection. Layering each look with a sweater or jacket gives each outfit the endless capacity to adapt to cool spring/summer nights. The women’s collection is the polar opposite it’s very soft and feminine. Flowing fabrics and draped patterns give these looks a fresh and edgy flare along with bright and colorful prints.

Paradigm Entertainment Launch Party and Fashion Show

Paradigm Entertainment Inc is a promotional company with two major objectives in mind. One of which is event promotion, partnering with other companies to do live shows and concerts with artists. These live events will take place during some of the busiest times in Toronto such as The Toronto Film Festival, Fashion week and Caribana. They will be urban based, catering to the demographic that enjoy Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae and Soca music. Artist Relations is the other objective, offering up and coming and undiscovered artists an opportunity to cultivate their talent to become the next Drake or Justin Bieber. Bios, press kits, creating websites, managing and booking these artists are some of the tools used to make these raw talents shine through amongst the mega stars in today’s music industry.

Last month I had the pleasure of being invited by Ellie Shermer owner of Paradigm Entertainment Inc to attend the launch of the company. It was held in the heart of Toronto’s clubbing district at Club XS. The event was open to the public however it was filled with press, club owners and also Universal and Sony representatives. The night was filled with anticipation not only to celebrate the launch of the company but to view the main event which was the fashion show showcasing some of Toronto’s talent. Five designers were chosen Gregory Allen, Vicerra, Studio Biba, Naz Swimwear and Spago. “I try to choose designers that maybe described as up and coming and different. One of our designers Vicerra actually does costume design for movie sets. I just went for people who have a very strong understanding of their design and what their brand is all about” said Tahnee-Lloyd Smith Creative Director of the fashion show.

Ellie is majority owner of Paradigm along with Mark Saltzman and Kevin Dunlop and has been promoting for the last eight years. He started with another company called Mass Appeal in 2002, doing the weekly and one off events at different clubs in downtown Toronto. Knowing deep down that he had found his calling Ellie made this his full time job in 2004. Ellie then ventured off on his own in 2006, starting Glamour Entertainment with his current business partners Mark and Kevin. “Over the past 8 years I have worked with all the big DJ’s in Toronto and other promoters. I have promoted concerts with artist such as Drake, Bow Wow, Fabulous, Trey Songz, DJ Jazzy Jeff and done parties where Lebron James, Jay-Z and Rihanna were present. I’ve been doing it for a while now and Glamour Entertainment is a full function promotion company that does 2 weekly parties, we cater to different demographics 19-21 years to 25 plus as well.”

Ellie, I know that you are not really involved in the fashion show aspect of this event, but tell me out of all the designers who are you most excited to see and why?

“Gregory Allen. Big fan of his stuff, he has some of the dopest dress shirts and bow ties. Also some of the new concepts for his line that he’s coming out with are pretty amazing as well as his custom furniture line. This will give all the people that coming through that door the opportunity to see how talented he is. Naz Swimwear, because I am interested in seeing some beautiful ladies lol and see some swim suits they are a pretty big company and they had this huge fashion show last week.”

What should we expect from Ellie Shermer in the future?

“More success and creating events that Toronto and across Canada will hopefully enjoy. Trying to putting together this event featuring DJ Khaled, as well as maybe doing a show in June with Chris Brown, so there are some big stuff on the horizon for us. So Toronto should stay tuned to what Paradigm and Glamour have in store.”
